A call for Volunteers to the Himalayas by Ronald Rodrigues

‘Change, development and social service’ seem intriguing and attractive from the outside but deep within lies the unknown true challenge of reality. And it is only when you get to the ground, dirty your feet in the field and experience the problem with your naked eye that you realise Change is a gradual process which demands serious continued efforts but is possible and equally thrilling.

Somewhere at some point in our lives a thought crosses our mind where we all want to do something for others. But often, neither is the ‘something’ defined nor is there any clarity about ‘others’. Rural Centre for Human Interests (RUCHI), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Himachal Pradesh, gives an opportunity for anyone and everyone to experience the on-ground life of rural India with utmost proximity.

Since 1983, volunteers from several states of India and different parts of various foreign countries have been extending their help in rural development. But then again upliftment is a tedious process which has increasing demands with fruits taking their own time to ripe. And these fruits require a constant approach of awareness, information, encouragement, guidance and help.

Life in Rural India or villages encompassed within the Himalayas is quite enthralling. While the villagers are illiterate and unaware about the advancement of technology, they are meticulously hospitable and ethically committed to the battle of survival. “I do not have any kind of educational knowledge or even a slightest idea about literacy but I very well know how to survive and earn a living by ethical means. I have a family where my husband works in the farm and in the kitchen too while, I cook, manage the kids and work in the fields,” claims Neelam, a villager from Bandh Gaon of Solan District, Himachal Pradesh.

With projects directly connected to the villagers, volunteers have been contributing for various tasks like Water Conservation including construction of water storage tanks, rainwater harvesting and recharge and use of natural sources of water. Empowerment of women is another area where Self-Help Groups (SHGs) comprising of women have been formed to initiate savings among women and provide a platform for personality development.

Community Health is being motivated through health camps, free check-ups and information about health centres for villagers suffering from various diseases. Students are an integral part of society and volunteers have been constantly educating students, helping them communicate and eradicate fears in schools situated on top of the hills and slum areas.

As it is the Himalayan range, environment is a huge factor which is conserved and improved through plantation, organic farming, vermicompost, maintenance of forest land, use of solar energy, cleanliness drives and waste management initiatives. Art and Culture is encouraged through various activities of income generation like handicrafts, cloth bags, basket making, embroidery and sewing techniques.

Along with serious work, volunteers live a simple way of life experiencing the true colours of rural India in all its sincerity. Cultural exchange with a peak into the daily local life amidst the serenity of the hills is what is desired for and gifted by RUCHI to everyone who wishes to make a difference.

Ultimately, it is the effort that matters whether big or small. And as Change is a gradual process, these tiny efforts require numerous hands, ideas and contributions. Aris Prasla, a 17-year-old volunteer, says, “I always wanted to do something worthwhile in my life. I interned with RUCHI for a month and realised the reality and effort needed to change the mindset of someone so that they develop and improve their standard of living. Rural India is still facing a lot of challenges which are not spoken about and only you and I can help in our own way. Maybe it is time that you pack your bags, try something different and help touch lives of people.”

Wherever you are and whoever you are, you can always make the most of this opportunity with RUCHI for the hills are calling and the Himalayas are waiting for you!
